"Jesus looked straight at him with love and said, “You need only one thing. Go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.” When the man heard this, gloom spread over his face, and he went away sad, because he was very rich. " Mark 10:21-22
Jesus once told a rich man to sell all that he had and give to the poor. The rich man walked away sorrowful even though eternal life was at stake. It's easy to look at this story and wonder how a person can prioritize temporary riches as more valuable than eternal life, but that's the kind of miscalculating power of money.
Today we have a global scientific consensus that fossil fuels are warming the planet and putting God's creation and life on earth at risk. Unfortunately, a relatively small number of companies that make extravagant amounts of money mining and burning fossil fuels have made the decision to prioritize short-term riches over a a healthy planetary ecosystem--to the detriment of all.
Just as there's consensus among scientists regarding the cause of climate change, there's also agreement among most economists on how to fix it--by putting a price on carbon pollution.
From June 9-11th, Citizens Climate Lobby will host their annual conference in D.C., and ordinary individuals from across the country will lobby for the bipartisan Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, a revenue neutral law that would put a price on carbon pollution and distribute the dividends to the American people. Climate Caretakers will be there and will be organizing an evening of fellowship, prayer, and networking during the CCL conference. More information coming soon from Climate Caretakers...
Heavenly Father, we repent of our greed and lack of spiritual awareness that so often prioritizes money over the health and well being of our human family and of your creation. We pray that you awaken your people to righteousness in how we treat the earth and its precious ecosystems that sustain life.
As citizens from across the country descend on Washington D.C. this June to talk with their legislators about a carbon fee and dividend, we pray that you move upon the hearts of these legislators to act with justice in regards to climate change. We pray that your grace and presence be with everyone advocating for a speedy transition towards a clean energy economy. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, advocate, and Savior. Amen
